Telecollaborative Project between Singapore and Brunei primary schools.

Telecollaborative Project between Singapore and Brunei primary schools.

Project: Planning a travel itinerary

Objective: To enhance students’ speaking and writing skills.
Target group: Primary 4 Singapore students and Primary 5 students from Brunei
Technology used: Skype or Window Live Messenger and Google Documents

The reason why we have chosen either Skype or Window Live Messenger for communication between the students across the two countries is because it is easy to use and there are not many buttons for the students to use.

Final product: The Brunei students will have to write a travel itinerary on places that they want to go in Singapore while the Singapore students will have to write the travel itinerary on places they want to go in Brunei.
For a start, the students will introduce themselves, their school and their friends. After the self introduction, they can proceed to the activity in the next session.

Activity:
Each student from each country will be paired with each other. They will then communicate through Skype and introduce more about their country and the places of interest that they want to recommend to their friends. They would also have to let their friends know why they have selected the places.

After the recommendation made by their friends, they will then select 2 - 3 places that they would like to include in their itinerary.

Ideas for using Voki in your classroom

Students can work in pairs or groups to research on a biography of an important person. After doing some research on the person that they are going to talk about, they will write out the script and then record on their Voki. Once completed, they can present their Voki to their friends. The other students can provide peer feedback and allow their friends to make improvements to their Voki.

ICT Needs Analysis

My institution
My school is a government primary school located in the eastern part of Singapore. It is a neighbourhood school  with about an enrolment of 1200 pupils between the ages of 7 and 12 years and a teaching staff of about 100 teachers.

Main question
In this needs analysis, I would like to find out the level of proficiency of teachers and students in the use of ICT in the teaching and learning of the English language.

Sources

1. About 40 current students in each level in the school.

2. Two teachers from every (about 10% of the teacher population)

Methods  and rationale:

1. Questionnaire
Data can be objectively quantified and is more objective and we are able to get it quickly.
2. Interview
It helps us to understand more about the teachers’ and students’ use of technology
in-depth and quantitative data can be further triangulated with the interview

Copyright Law for Singapore Educators

Copyright Law
The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) comes under the purview of Ministry of Law and set up by the Government of Singapore. IPOS advises on and administers intellectual property (IP) laws, promotes IP awareness and provides the infrastructure to facilitate the development of IP in Singapore.

Copyright is a private property right that protects original works such as novels, computer programmes, music and photos.

Fair dealing
There are some “fair dealing” exceptions to copyright infringement under Singapore's copyright law. A certain amount of copying, for example, is permissible as long as it is a situation of “fair dealing” as determined by the Court. Factors the Court may consider in determining “fair dealing” include the purpose and character of the dealing or the nature of the work.

Exceptions in Educational Institutions

A summary of the special exceptions for educational field presented in Table 1 & Table 2:

Advice for Government schools

Schools are strongly encouraged to seek advice from the legal department of Ministry of Education (MOE) if they encounter specific copyright issues. MOE itself may have entered into private licence agreements with copyright owners. The terms of any such agreements may allow Government schools a wider scope of use than that available under the exceptions in our copyright law.

Similarity and difference between Copyright in USA and Singapore

Based on the table above, the amount of, purpose and time-limit for copying may be similar in the two countries. However, the notation and record-keeping in the US may not be as strict as the one in Singapore.

All About me and my school

Hello, my name is Waheeda and I live in Tampines, Singapore.

I am a teacher and I've been teaching for at least 10 years.

I teach in a primary school, at  Junyuan Primary School.

Picture taken from http://techtrek2013.blogspot.com/2013/02/junyuan-primary-school-visit.html

If you are interested to find out about my school, the various interesting academic and CCA programmes that we offer, do check it out here -http://www.junyuanpri.moe.edu.sg/

What's unique about my school is that we have a studio where students learn a little about broadcasting and have the opportunities to do a broadcast to the whole school on a topic of interest that the teachers have selected. This is one programme in which we aspire to develop all our pupils to be Confident Communicators.
